The OneDrive Device ID

The OneDrive Device ID

Soon also in your OneDrive.

If you have installed the Insiders version of OneDrive, then it is already visible. In the settings under About. And with the GUID it is unique. Clearly on your computer. Definitely for every Office 365 tenant, if you have more than one. And it doesn’t matter whether OneDrive for Business or OneDrive Personal. Each instance has a unique OneDrive device ID. And if you have multiple computers, on each computer.

I would have liked to have had this already at the beginning of the OneDrive app development. Because then you could have isolated errors better and faster. There are log files for each instance on your computer and the OneDrive device ID can also be found in the SyncDiagnostics.log

What can the user do with it? First of all, nothing. However, it can lead to a faster solution if you have problems with the OneDrive app. Because it may well be that you only have a problem with one instance. That means OneDrive in general is ok, but you can find the error faster. In the OneDrive program directory there is a batch file that collects all the log files that cannot be read by the user and stores them compressed in a CAB file. And with both pieces of information, Microsoft can then isolate a possible error more quickly.

In the future, options are also planned that are intended for the administrator of the Office 365 tenant. Microsoft is working on a solution that allows the administrator to examine all devices of all employees for OneDrive errors and then write the results in an Excel spreadsheet. So do not be surprised if the administrator of your company reports to you and tells you that there is a problem on your company laptop. And you still haven’t noticed it overheated! The OneDrive device ID is also used for this.

Die OneDrive-Geräte-ID

OneDrive-Geräte-ID

Zuerst einmal nichts.

Wo jede Seite manuell entstand. Wo es noch keine Templates gab.  Also hatte auch in eine eigene Webseite. Irgendwann habe ich dann umgestellt. Auf einen Blog. Und seit Oktober 2010 blogge ich. Mittlerweile in zwei Sprachen. Denn Suchen will gelernt sein.

In (fast) jeder Sprache.

Fragen zu OneDrive Und OneDrive for Business.

Vielen Dank Microsoft.

Hier die Auflistung aller OneDrive Gruppenrichtlinien (23.10.19)

“OneDrive Group Policies – not only for the enterprise”

More and more Group Policies for OneDrive and for Windows 10 were established to give administrators control over devices, storage, and behavior. This session describes the user behavior to sync many files from different libraries for collaboration, not only from their own tenant, but also from other tenants through B2B sync, and give the administrators full control via Group Policies. These GPOs not only for OneDrive, but also for the different devices, control Windows 10 through OneDrive Files on Demand and Storage Sense, and also help user behavior of deleting files by mistake. It includes my Top 10 of Group Policies for OneDrive

* Allow OneDrive to disable permission inheritance in folders synced read-only
This setting lets the OneDrive sync client remove all inherited permissions within read-only folders syncing on a user’s PC.

If you enable this setting, the OneDrive sync client can disable permission inheritance in read-only folders to improve sync speed.

If you disable or do not configure this setting, the OneDrive sync client will preserve permission inheritance in read-only folders. Sync speed may be significantly slower.

** Block file downloads when users are low on disk space
This setting lets you specify a minimum amount of available disk space and block the OneDrive sync client (OneDrive.exe) from downloading files when users have less than this amount.

Users will be prompted with options to help free up space.

Minimal available Diskspace: 0 to 10 TB

[08/28/19] Tehre is a bug, because the highest number is 9999. Microsoft is informed

***
Warn users who are low on diskspace

This setting lets you specify a minimum amount of available disk space and warn users when the OneDrive sync client (OneDrive.exe) downloads a file that causes them to have less than this amount.

Users will be prompted with options to help free up space.

In the Value field, enter the amount of available disk space below which users will receive warning. If you use this policy together with “Block file downloads when users are low on disk space”, the value for this setting should be greater than the value for the blocking downloads

Valid values are from 0 through 10 TB

[08/28/19] Tehre is a bug, because the highest number is 9999. Microsoft is informed

****  Enable Automatic upload bandwidth management for OneDrive

This setting lets the OneDrive sync client (OneDrive.exe) upload data in the background only when unused bandwidth is available. It prevents the sync client from interfering with other apps that are using the network. This setting is powered by the Windows LEDBAT (Low Extra Delay Background Transport) protocol. When LEDBAT detects increased latency that indicates other TCP connections are consuming bandwidth, the sync client will reduce its own consumption to prevent interference. When network latency decreases again and bandwidth is freed up, the sync client will increase the upload rate and consume the unused bandwidth.

If you enable this setting, the sync client upload rate will be set to "Adjust automatically" based on bandwidth availability and users won’t be able to change it.

If you disable or do not configure this setting, users can choose to limit the upload rate to a fixed value (in KB/second), or set it to "Adjust automatically".

Important

If you enable or disable this setting, and then change it back to Not Configured, the last configuration will remain in effect. We recommend enabling this setting instead of "Limit the sync client upload speed to a fixed rate." You should not enable both settings at the same time. This setting will override "Limit the sync client upload rate to a percentage of throughput" if both are enabled on the same device.

* Prevent users from syncing libraries and folders shared from other organizations
This GPO allow/disallow Tenant 2 Tenant Synchronization. Microsoft has named this Synchronization B2B Sync.

** Require users to confirm large delete operations
Unfortunately Microsoft has not announced the numbers, by which the function will trigger. The Threshold is 200.

to push another number you must do it manually. Read here

[10/30/19] with Version 19.192.0926.0010 you have it in the Group policy

*** Set the sync client update ring
This GPO is moved from User to the Computer-Configuration.

**** Specify SharePoint Server URL and organization name AND Specify the OneDrive location in a hybrid environment

The only way, to sync files with OneDrive to the OnPremise SharePoint is SharePoint Server 2019. Toy sync to and from older Versions of SharePoint (SharePoint Server 2016, 2013, 2010 and  2007) you must use the old sync client called Groove.exe

Windows 10 - Speicheroptimierung

I’m always asked what it’s like with the different OneDrive status symbols. Most of my OneDrive workshops I do not get any, or only wrong answers. This is the reason to write another blog post about it. Of course I have already described it several times:

So, if the gentle reader could follow this, then maybe a few additional explanations:

Today I can see and edit files if necessary, even I have a small hard disc. Microsoft has changed NTFS. With Files On Demand synchronization only rudimentary information from the cloud is synchronized to the device. The actual content is not. So I can therefore look at the file in Explorer, even mini-pictures stuck in the linked list of NTFS file system. And do not take a room on your hard disc.

OneDrive Files onDemand: Status "Cloud Only "

Because the content will not be editable until the content has been synchronized from the cloud to the device, the attribute changes, the icon also and the file is now editable. Also costs space on the hard disk. In Explorer, I can also decide to throw away the local „content“ of the file. Free up space. I’m talking about throwing away, not deleting. Deleting a file will move it to the local recycle bin. When it is emptied, the entry of the file in the NTFS is resolved. It is still present on the hard disk, but the operating system does not know it anymore. The place will eventually be overwritten. When freeing up memory, however, only the pointer showing the beginning of the content is eliminated. The entry in NTFS is retained, the attribute and thus the icon in the Windows File Explorer is changed. Nothing is synced to the cloud because the cloud is still full content.

OneDrive Files onDemand: Status "Local available" und "Always available"

In both Windows and Mac, we have 4 icons:

  • Cloud Only
  • Local available
  • Always available
  • Syncing

OneDrive Status Symbols

Many do not know, that’s why I explain here the difference between „Local available“ and „always available”.

Files On Demand came with the Windows version 1709 and at this point there was no difference. Because the Windows programmers have spent a whole year to implement an algorithm in Windows to clean up. Meanwhile (half a year later) one speaks of intelligent tidying up. Here I do not agree with Microsoft, in the age of Artificial Intelligence could have solved the cleaner and more elegant. But with the Windows version 1903 at least the administrators have a tool (group guidelines) made available, which until then only the user had in his own hands. For each library, the user can choose when and how often to clean up. (System Preferences: System, Storage, Storage Sense, Local Available Cloud Content). I myself have 10 or more entries that I can influence individually, whether, and if so, how often you want to clean up.

Hello Microsoft, the user wants to work, and not maintain settings!

As written, as of Windows version 1903, administrators can now change this globally. But what happens there?

Every time a file that is only available in the cloud is clicked on, it is synchronized, ie downloaded. Only on this device. The icon changes, the file is now available on this device (even without Internet). If I edit this file and save the content, the file is synced back to the cloud. If I do not set up my files manually, I can leave that to the system too. According to the selected properties, the system will automatically do that now so that the space of my hard disk does not become too small. And convert these files to „Cloud Only“. The content is then no longer available locally on this device. If you convert these files by clicking on „Available available„, they will not be touched by any memory optimization and will always be available on this device, even without the Internet.

Many administrators do not know that. As of Windows version 1903, administrators have access to additional Windows Group Policies, where this cleanup is set uniformly for the entire company, but you should know anyway. If no setting is stored in the system settings, you should occasionally clean up manually.

Where can these group policies be found?

They have a name: memory guidelines. We find these under Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, Storage Sense.

However, these can only be found as of Windows 10, Version 1903 and higher

    • This is the alphabetical listing. First we have to turn on the process „global“. Furthermore, depending on the group policy,

I advise users to be informed

. Because depending on the setting, you ensure that, for example, the wastebasket is tidied up. In your office, it goes without saying that the cleaning crew empties the wastebasket, but not on your computer, right?

Allow Storage Storage Global

Storage Sense can automatically clean some of the user’s files to free up disk space. By default, Storage Sense is automatically turned on when the machine runs into low disk space and is set to run whenever the machine runs into storage pressure. This cadence can be changed in Storage settings or set with the „Configure Storage Sense cadence“ group policy.

Enabled:

Storage Sense is turned on for the machine, with the default cadence as ‘during low free disk space’*). Users cannot disable Storage Sense, but they can adjust the cadence (unless you also configure the „Configure Storage Sense cadence“ group policy).

Disabled:

Storage Sense is turned off the machine. Users cannot enable Storage Sense.

Not Configured:

By default, Storage Sense is turned off until the user runs into low disk space or the user enables it manually. Users can configure this setting in Storage settings.

Remarks:

*) My demand from Microsoft has shown that there is no fixed value that can be used for ‚during low free disk space‘. Of course, a calculation is deposited, but this will not be disclosed, and Microsoft will adjust this value in the newer versions of Windows.

So if „Global“ was turned on, you should also configure the interval of memory optimization.

Configure Storage Sense cadence

Configure Storage Sense cadence

Storage Sense can automatically clean some of the user’s files to free up disk space.

If the group policy „Allow Storage Sense“ is disabled, then this policy does not have any effect.

Enabled:

You must provide the desired Storage Sense cadence. Supported options are: daily, weekly, monthly, and during low free disk space. The default is 0 (during low free disk space).

Disabled or Not Configured:

By default, the Storage Sense cadence is set to “during low free disk space”. Users can configure this setting in Storage settings.

And if these are configured, immediately follows the deletion of temporary files:

Temporary Files Cleanup

Allow Storage Sense Temporary Files Cleanup

When Storage Sense runs, it can delete the user’s temporary files that are not in use. If the group policy „Allow Storage Sense“ is disabled, then this policy does not have any effect.

Enabled:

Storage Sense will delete the user’s temporary files that are not in use. Users cannot disable this setting in Storage settings.

Disabled:

Storage Sense will not delete the user’s temporary files. Users cannot enable this setting in Storage settings.

Not Configured:

By default, Storage Sense will delete the user’s temporary files. Users can configure this setting in Storage settings.

Remarks

The following Files will be deleted:

  • Temporary setup files
  • Old indexed content
  • System cache files
  • Internet cache files
  • Device Driver packages
  • System downloaded program files
  • Dated system log files
  • System error memory dump files
  • System error minidump files
  • Temporary system files
  • Dated Windows update temporary files

Configure Storage Sense Recycle Bin cleanup threshold

When Storage Sense runs, it can delete files in the user’s Recycle Bin if they have been there for over a certain amount of days.

If the group policy „Allow Storage Sense“ is disabled, then this policy does not have any effect.

Enabled:

You must provide the minimum age threshold (in days) of a file in the Recycle Bin before Storage Sense will delete it. Support values are: 0 – 365.

If you set this value to zero, Storage Sense will not delete files in the user’s Recycle Bin. The default is 30 days.

Disabled or Not Configured:

By default, Storage Sense will delete files in the user’s Recycle Bin that have been there for over 30 days. Users can configure this setting in Storage settings.

Remarks:

In Control Panel, the user can only set this value between Never, 1 Day, 30, Days, 60 Days. Group Policy allows values between 0 and 365

Configure Storage Sense Downloads cleanup threshold

When Storage Sense runs, it can delete files in the user’s Downloads folder if they have been there for over a certain amount of days.

If the group policy „Allow Storage Sense“ is disabled, then this policy does not have any effect.

Enabled:

You must provide the minimum age threshold (in days) of a file in the Downloads folder before Storage Sense will delete it. Support values are: 0 – 365.

If you set this value to zero, Storage Sense will not delete files in the user’s Downloads folder. The default is 0, or never deleting files in the Downloads folder.

Disabled or Not Configured:

By default, Storage Sense will not delete files in the user’s Downloads folder. Users can configure this setting in Storage settings.

Remarks:

In Control Panel, the user can only set this value between Never, 1 Day, 30, Days, 60 Days. Group Policy allows values between 0 and 365

But that’s not all. Space is also freed up with the next group policy

Configure Storage Sense Cloud Content dehydration threshold

When Storage Sense runs, it can dehydrate cloud-backed content that hasn’t been opened in a certain amount of days.

If the group policy „Allow Storage Sense“ is disabled, then this policy does not have any effect.

Enabled:

You must provide the number of days since a cloud-backed file has been opened before Storage Sense will dehydrate it. Support values are: 0 – 365.

If you set this value to zero, Storage Sense will not dehydrate any cloud-backed content. The default value is 0, or never dehydrating cloud-backed content.

Disabled or Not Configured:

By default, Storage Sense will not dehydrate any cloud-backed content. Users can configure this setting in Storage settings.

Remarks:

NTFS is not just the date when the file was created. But also a date when it was last opened. And exactly this date is used for the calculation and the optimization. If the current date is greater than the date of the last access added to the value of this group policy, the file is automatically „dehydrated“ into „available only in the cloud“, so the content is discarded. The cloud still contains the original file

Comment:

Although storage sense is part of Windows 10 version 1903, while the system settings can be used to configure individual and different document libraries differently in terms of time, Group Policy is missing. Not surprisingly, most users will not get lost in memory optimization pages. Second, each user has access to different document libraries in different areas. Document Libraries that have been synchronized must therefore be considered „global“ in Group Policy. And according to Microsoft, they will too. This means that administrators must also provide information to the users here.

Windows Enterprise 19.086.0502.0008

All version with comments you will find here.

Remarks

*) Anyone Link Expiration Policy

Microsoft has changed the maximum date from 90 days to 730 (2 years). This makes not really sense for me. Enterprise companies want to reduce, not expand the anonym Links to external.  But there may be reasons, why there expand this. If you read the blog post, you will find the number 720. And this is wrong. it must be 730.

I have informed about the little thing. In the past they have enhanced it also to 730 days. but inside the Sharing PopUp you could only establish one year and not 2 years. This bug is now fixed.

Fix OneDrive sync problems

OneDrive Symbol? Error? Any solution?

By now OneDrive has grown up. It can be managed with group policies, it’s good for large companies dealing with the Modern Workplace, as for the individual user who "just" syncs his photos to the cloud. The variety of functions is still increasing, and the interface is being expanded and redesigned for the various mobile devices. Even if some MVP colleagues tell me they can not work with it because …

They are so many reasons. OneDrive for Business and OneDrive Personal are no longer network drives, and Microsoft still needs some improvement. But the ladies and gentlemen from Redmond are on the right path.

Sometimes, however, errors occur, and because Microsoft not only processes data with the Next Generation Sync Client (NGSC), no, even in Windows Explorer under Windows 10 or under the latest Office versions, OneDrive is integrated and makes troubleshooting difficult.

But Microsoft collected several Errors, not only the description, no, they give you advice, what do you have to do. A solution. And the list collects more than 120 issues

You may start here or with the list below

Of course there are other aids. For example, in this blog. For example, a reset. But just look in the blog itself. Good succeed.

I hope that with this contribution I could help one or the other user / administrator.

OneDrive GPO: Require users to confirm large delete operations

3. Juli 2019 1 Kommentar

OneDrive GPO: Require users to confirm large delete operations

In mid-June 2018, I wrote about the new Group Policy and Definitions for OneDrive. I also reported on the missing documentation at Microsoft. This is especially about the group policy

Require users to confirm large delete operations

This group policy prevents users from "accidentally" deleting too many files, too many files are set in number, but Microsoft will make a correction on the web page, default is 200 files.

If Group Policy is enabled and the user accidentally deletes a folder with more than 200 files, he will be asked to confirm. Or he can make a restore with one click.

However, the fixed allocation of 200 files may not suit everyone. This is too little for one organization and too much for the other. And there is also a remedy here. (Currently you have to make a registry entry, I think that with a further update of the admx files the maximum number will be adjustable directly in the group policy.

So here is the registry hack:

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\OneDrive insert a new entry

"LocalMassDeleteFileDeleteThreshold"=<dword>

Example, to set the bar at 100 files to trigger a mass delete warning.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\OneDrive

"LocalMassDeleteFileDeleteThreshold"=dword:0064

You may insert a number between 1 and 100000, so the trigger works always or if you delete 100000 files.

Attention: Before you are working on the Registry, save it !

OneDrive GPO: Require users to confirm large delete operations We have to configure the Group Policy Require users to confirm large delete operations

Then we open the registry editor

Regedit Settings for OneDrive

Here we have to insert the new key as mention above and then we have to insert the number. (The picture shows the number 10)

Then we have the opportunity to test the whole thing. (That’s why I only set 10 files.). Let’s create a folder and copy at least 10 files into it. The folder with all files is synchronized. Then we delete the folder.

Popup Notification to react A short pop-up window appears and …
you can react

But in case you missed it…

OneDrive Warning in the notifaction area You see the warning symbol in the notification area
OneDrive Warning for 7 days and if you click on the OneDrive warning icon, OneDrive shows you, what you have to do. You have up to 7 days time to react

Remove

The user acknowledge with a click on “Remove” and then the files will be deleted in the cloud and from all other synced devices

Restore files

if you click on Restore files OR if you do not react within 7 days the files are automatically restored

If you have recycled your local bin, the data are restored from the cloud

Accidental deletion is thus excluded. Of course you have to adjust the number of files to your own organizational structure (document libraries, folder structures, etc.). And, of course, it’s better to tell users not to delete the Cloud Only folder and the 60,000 files it contains. He does not take any space on the hard drive anyway.

Require users to confirm large delete operations

"LocalMassDeleteFileDeleteThreshold"=<dword> vorzunehmen.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\OneDrive

"LocalMassDeleteFileDeleteThreshold"=dword:0064

This version is installed with the Windows 10 Insider Build 14986 or 14393. After theses releases Microsoft also has released this verion to other groups. There ois a issue with the US chnagelog website, becauuse Microsoft cut out the version 6705.1122 and replaced it with the version 17.3.6720.1207

Remarks about Version 17.3.6705.1122

You see in the Changelog, that this version is a released Version and a Public Preview with the same number. In the MAC Area you see, that there are two different versions. So for MAC User, they now have a separate Download Link, because Apple does not change the version, so there is still an old version there.

The difference with both versions

Both versions have the same functions, but the Preview has some more, but you have to do something manually to get the new functions from the Preview.

The Release Version now will be available to more users around the globe.

Preview

If you want to test the new functions of the Preview version, you have to read the following articles:

  • OneDrive (Personal)
  • OneDrive for Business
  • Files in Document-Libraries at Team-Sites
  • Files in Document-Libraries at Groups
  • Files, Shared with me

[Note 11/28/16]
Keep in mind, that the version 17.3.6674.1021 does not  automatic changeover your old Groove.exe libraries. Also you have to install a registry Key, to sync from Groups and Team Sites. Again: Read the following Microsoft Document

[Note 11/29/16]
I received an Email form the Microsoft Product Group, regarding the different versions:

  • The last full Released Version has the version number 0809
  • Version 1021 is an Interim Update and Release

If you tenant is set on first Release, then you are able to use version 1021, to sync data from team sites. But you have to install the version manually and set the registry key. Do it with the Microsoft Document.

The next full version will come this year with a version number 11xx

To sync data with all SharePoint Server OnPremise (all Versions), you still have to use the old “Groove.exe”. Here is the Microsoft Download site for the 32- and 64 Bit Versions of the different Groove.exe.

OneDrive | Wie wird man OneDrive Insider

OneDrive Insider

reg.exe add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\OneDrive /v EnableTeamTier_Internal /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Sync Client Reset

Do you have issues with the synchronization of OneDrive files?
in Windows Explorer you see files, that will never end to synchronize?

So there are more than one possibilities to fix the it. There is an easy part to fix that with an OneDrive Reset

I have had some issues on a Windows device. During the start Sync is done, but during normal operations no sync is done with this tenant, (I have synced files with two different tenants on this device and the other tenant works well. I have to fix it.

Looking inside that not normal syncing tenant I found such:

folders

OneDrive for Business

17.544

704

SharePoint doc libraries

31.398

1.385

62.942

2.089

Because I use ‘files on demand’ not all of the above files will be synced. Most of the files are Cloud Only.  But the structure, folder names and filenames must be synced. So some information will be in a cache, and this should be cleaned too.

Call the Execute app

So you have to enter “RUN” in the search Windows on the left corner and Press Enter. Then you should copy the next line into the Run window:

%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

Execute an Order

First, the Next Generation Sync client (OneDrive.exe) will be stopped. After that, a REST will be executed. All different Sources (OneDrive for Business, OneDrive Personal and all different synchronized document libraries are reconciled. This may take a few minutes. If nothing happened, you should Restart your OneDrive Client manually:

%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe

But if you have such an amount of data, it takes a while. And of course, it depends of Internet bandwidth and Speed of your device.

Give your device a chance….

OneDrive | Synchronisations-Probleme?

Sync Client Reset

%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset

%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe
