Now a few weeks have passed since I published the OneDrive Basics with the 8th part. One reason for this is that a lot has happened and still happens with OneDrive. So at the moment "add to my OneDrive" is rolled out. There are still a few inconsistencies, so it is possible that you haven’t noticed anything yet. Unless…, but you can read about it here. On the other hand I was busy with Remote OneDrive workshops.  And last but not least: There are several community events taking place on the planet. And also here the lectures have to be adapted and renewed or even completely created.

The 9th issue is about mobile devices. With the funeral of Windows Phone there are only 2 operating systems left, iOS and Android

For both operating systems the OneDrive product group at Microsoft has its own people working on the respective OneDrive apps. The apps should contain the basic functionality, but of course they are different in their handling.

As you can see from the two pictures, it is possible to connect to the different document libraries in SharePoint Online, my OneDrive for Business and my OneDrive Personal.

While we talk about synchronization on Windows and Mac, this is not the case with mobile operating systems. They just connect to the cloud and display the results. If I want to edit documents even without a connection to the Internet, I have to put the required documents into offline mode, then they are kept in sync. Well, my fingers are a bit too clumsy to edit a Word document with it or add sales figures in Excel, but the principle works. And before a presentation, it makes sense to quickly flip through the slides of the PowerPoint on the smartphone. And not to forget, there are also the various iPADs and devices that run under the Android operating system. And because of the larger screen factor, it makes much more sense there. In offline mode, however, the internal memory of these devices has to be taken into account. A "files on demand" is not available there.

In the properties of the mobile devices you can add accounts (OneDrive Personal, OneDrive for Business):

In the settings you can then set, for example, whether the photos taken with the camera smartphones should be uploaded to which service. In the past this was only possible with OneDrive Personal. Then Microsoft made improvements and now the customer has the choice.

But remember: if you have set up OneDrive for Business and leave the company, access may no longer be possible and your pictures may be gone. Well, they are still stored on the smartphone. Are you sure? In any case, no backup. But OneDrive (Personal) can also become critical. Some accounts have been blocked because pictures with too much bare skin were captured by the automatic scanner. Yes, one agreed the first time…

But let’s take a look at the business version (OneDrive for Business)

	The images show that not only the content of OneDrive for Business is displayed, but also "Shared with me" folders and files. The top image on the left also shows folders that are displayed with "Add to OneDrive". But this function is not yet rolled out everywhere, then it looks like the left picture.
	And as described above, the "Shortcut to My Files" function is already available. And you can even remove it from your smartphone.

Remains as last point, the access to all libraries I have access to

	This shows that with mobile devices we can access, view and edit all files we reach (where we have the necessary permissions). The only requirement is a connection to the Internet. If there is no WLAN or the telephone provider is not available, then I have to make the corresponding file(s) available "offline" beforehand.

Summary

With the OneDrive Apps for iOS and Android, Microsoft ensures that you can access all your data on your smartphone while on the move. Depending on the environment you have slow or fast internet, in WLAN anyway, but even a connection with the internet provider of your choice leaves almost nothing to be desired. Of course, this depends on the country, the provider and the network coverage, and you also have to be aware that you will charge your data rate with your provider.

Some users complain that no complete 2-way synchronization is implemented. But the different requirements, data volumes etc. speak against it.

But Microsoft is implementing new features very quickly today, which will be available shortly after the desktop versions.
