So much confusion since Microsoft released the first Version of the Next Generation Sync Client (NGSC). I received many questions on different communication channel. But unfortunately I may not answer them one by one. Before I will start with with the setup, first a different approach to explain, which Sync Client will work on which Operating system, and how do you synchronize data with NGSC. I have had a blog post here.
What is your Operating System?
Operating System | Usage of NGSC |
Windows XP | No |
Windows Vista | No |
Windows 7 | Yes |
Windows 8.0 | Yes |
Windows 8.1 | No *) |
Windows 10 | Yes |
Mac OS X 10.0 | Yes |
*) Microsoft will support the usage of NGSC with Windows 8.1 in the first quarter of 2016. Background is, that OneDrive (Personal) is directly integrated in Windows Explorer, and that must be changed.
Those, who work with Windows 10, and this are now more than 200 Million users, they are still working with the new NGSC. And the functionality will now enhanced.
What we may now synchronize with NGSC?
The picture above shows all different storages within Office 365. And so it says, at this time you may not sync data with the NGSC to any on premise SharePoint. And certainly you have heard the Microsoft statement “Cloud first – mobile first” . So this is done also with the NGSC. First the cloud, then mobile, and then we will see.
document-libraries may synchronize with NGSC | |
SharePoint Online: Team site | NO, this time only with Groove |
Groups documents in Groups are stored in a hidden site collection |
NO, this time only with Groove |
OneDrive for Business (formerly known as MySite) |
Yes |
OneDrive Personal | Yes |
So now you see, if a question comes in, I always ask for the OS, and then for the storage place.
Where Do I find questions and answers for NGSC?
So, I think, Microsoft do that a little bit too complex. You do not find something about NGSC there. You find several articles at Office-Support. And to give you a better overview, I have put these articles into a flow chart.
so, where do I get the new client?
as mentioned above, it is depending on the operating system.
NGSC | for Windows 7 and 8.0 |
for MAC OS X | |
Windows 10 | Please read the web document of number 5 and download the deployment package. Extract this file. Then you will find two registry keys with the name EnableAddAccounts.reg and DefaultToBusinessFRE.reg. A click on both reg keys ad these keys to the registry |
To be continued. With step Three
