The automatic closing of links has always been on the wish list of administrators. Because a closed link, or rather a link that no longer leads to the target, is one less vulnerability. But haven’t we already been through this? Yes, but only with an anonymous „external“ link.
If the administrators allowed it at all, they could set a time limit for anonymous sharing. The maximum was 730 days, i.e. 2 years.
I always mention this in workshops, but I suggest much shorter periods. As an administrator, I myself have specified 80 days. The user himself can shorten this time, but not extend it.
And currently (July 2024) an option is being rolled out to also set a restriction for internal sharing and external sharing with certain people. This time restriction can be set by the user. And can also be removed by the user themselves.
It is therefore up to the administrators to make this new feature appealing to users so that the link closes itself at some point. This does not always work, but at least the user can also use it when sharing within the organization.
The whole thing works not only in Explorer/Finder, but also in the web version, and not only in OneDrive (for Business) but also in the document libraries of SharePoint Online, in the OneDrive parts of Teams and in all Office applications where sharing was already possible.
So now there is no longer any reason to prevent external sharing if the users have been trained.
