OneDrive | first Release of next Generation Sync Client
SkyDrive.exe is dead. Long live OneDrive.exe.
Now it is ready.The first release in January 2015 of OneDrive’s next generation sync client is on the way. And for the following operating systems:
- Windows Vista
- Windows 7
- Windows 8
- Windows 10
- MacOs
the clue:
OneDrive now is really OneDrive. The old SkyDrive.exe will be eliminated. The new one is now OneDrive.exe. Microsoft concludes the Rebranding.

You still work with Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8?
You have to wait a little bit. Microsoft rolled out the windows version, but they do it in steps. You should consider about the installation basis of more than 250 Million OneDrive users in the world.
Although the MacOS have to wait until the Apple store process is finished.
And under the hood?

With Windows 8.1 you will find the SkyDrive.exe in the folder %Windows%\System32. And the OneDrive.exe you will find under C:\Users\“User“\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive

If have updated to Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926, there is an automatic change form SkyDrive to OneDrive. But you have to know: Windows 10 is a Technical Preview a Technical Preview a Technical Preview. You may have attention to productive data!

Dann müssen Sie sich noch ein bisschen gedulden. Microsoft hat mit dem Rollout der Windows Versionen gestartet, aber wird dies in Stufen tun. Das macht durchaus Sinn, wenn man an die Installationsbasis von über 250 Millionen OneDrive Benutzer denkt
Auch die MacOS Benutzer müssen sich warten,bis das Procedere im Apple Store durch ist.

Erster Unterschied:
Die SkyDrive.exe unter Windows 8.1 war noch im Ordner %Windows%\System32 zu finden. Die OneDrive.exe finden wir jetzt unter C:\Users\“User“\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive
Dort finden wir auch mehrere Unterverzeichnisse:

Der Ordner 17.3.4597.109 entspricht der (derzeitigen) Produktversion und enthält die kompletten Installationsdateien und die abhängigen Ressourcen in mehreren Sprachen. |

Wer ein Update auf Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 9926 gestartet hat, muss sich keine Sorgen um die Umstellung machen. Die wird nämlich automatisch vorgenommen. Trotzdem sollten Sie immer daran denken: Windows 10 ist eine Technical Preview eine Technical Preview eine Technical Preview. Also Vorsicht mit produktiven Daten!

The year 2014 comes to an end. And on the last day I want to publish my wish list for Microsoft here. Because the users are not satisfied with the professional version of OneDrive . Too many problems clearly show that OneDrive for Business is currently only limited suitability for enterprise use. And Microsoft has not been able to roll out for the calendar year 2014, seasoned on the roadmap objectives, apps and functionalities. For me, the best message in 2014 was most important: A higher-level manager for both products: Finally, both teams can learn from each other. It has been found, however, that can not be realized many functionalities, that were targeted in 2014.

Stability when synchronizing

Sync speed
I’m happy with unlimited storage in the cloud. But I’m not happy with the synchronization speed. Is that the old sync protocol? I need hours or days…
Support for files larger than 2 GB
You can do that with the personal OneDrive, but you cannot do that with OneDrive for Business: Files greater 2 GB may not stored nor synchronized. That’s a problem with SharePoint, or better: it’s a problem with the underlying SQL Server. And if all tenant are rolled out with Advanced File encryption (Fort Knox), then all data is stored in SQL-Azure. This complexity can not change that simple. OneDrive stores the data also in Azure, but in Azure Files.
native Client for MAC User
was indeed announced for 2014. Runs currently in internal beta testing at Microsoft. There are many customers, waiting for that.
Data Loss Prevention
Has long been present in Exchange, already announced in October for OneDrive for Business, but not yet rolled out everywhere. Configuration of warnings on all office documents that show the user warnings that he is about to be synchronized for the company critical documents in OneDrive for Business, more specifically, to share these documents with other people.
Better MDM options
The MDM capabilities (monitoring, which and where mobile devices were used) should be expand. Many enterprise customers use third-party products such as Airwatch, Good or Mobilelron, but they cannot use them because of a lack of suitable API interfaces.

Administrators would be happy if they know who, when, where and how to access OneDrive for Business and the data of team sites. If we can not restrict syncing, they want to have a configurable audit and reporting function for admins.
OneDrive for Business as an additional drive
Users of Windows 8.1 and OneDrive know the drill. The integration into Windows Explorer. And Microsoft would find a much more rapid acceptance of OneDrive for Business when OneDrive for Business would be integrated as an additional drive. Via Group Policy or a configurator. As in many companies file servers are still involved.
Partial synchronization
First Microsoft announced 1 TB, then unlimited storage for OneDrive for Business are available. Sounds good, but , currently fails because of the amount of files, as described above with the SharePoint limitations. But even if these would no longer exist, there is another problem. How many mobile devices do you know, which have accurate store for saving 1 TB or more data on it? And currently you need the same storage twice for caching the data. The little brother OneDrive has the ability to partial sync the cloud data. That’s “Smart Files”. But with unlimited storage in the cloud, this technic also is not ideal. First approaches we find in the last build (9879) of Windows 10. There, a new concept was introduced, which actually goes back five steps at first. (Synchronization with Windows 7). And has also caused the displeasure of the tester. But that is only the first step in the development of nextGen Sync. But until the completion of Windows 10 Microsoft has still a few days time.
Display shared files in Windows Explorer
Many OneDrive user wish this function (yes, DropBox has it). And this function is also not available on the professional version (OneDrive for Business).
These are just a few requests to Microsoft. Its my personal wish list. The wish list has no priority order. I know there is still much to be desired. Oh, and by the end of 2015 I will be together again what Microsoft has realized it.

Das Jahr 2014 geht zu Ende. Und am letzte Tag möchte ich hier meine Wunschliste an Microsoft veröffentlichen. Weil wir Anwender vor allem mit der professionellen Variante nicht zufrieden sind. Zu viele Probleme belegen eindeutig, dass OneDrive for Business derzeit nur bedingt für den Enterprise Einsatz geeignet ist. Und Microsoft ist es nicht gelungen, die für das Kalenderjahr 2014 auf der Roadmap gestandenen Ziele, Apps und Funktionalitäten auszurollen. Für mich war eine Mitteilung 2014 das wichtigste: Ein übergeordneter Manager für beide Produkte: Endlich können beide Teams voneinander lernen. Dabei hat sich aber herausgestellt, das viele Ziele, die in 2014 angepeilt waren, nicht realisiert werden können.

Unterstützung von Dateien größer 2 GB
Was der kleine Bruder OneDrive bereits kann, ist dem großen verwehrt. Dateien, die größer als 2 GB sind, können nicht in OneDrive for Business gespeichert und synchronisiert werden. Das liegt nicht am Protokoll der Synchronisierung, das liegt am SharePoint (Online), aber noch genauer am darunter liegenden SQL Server. Und wenn irgendwann mal bei allen Tenants Advanced File encryption (Fort Knox) ausgerollt ist, liegen die Daten in SQL Azure. Diese Komplexität lässt sich nicht so einfach ändern. Beim Personal OneDrive liegen die Daten übrigens auch in Azure, allerdings in Azure Files.
nativer Client für MAC User
war ja auch für das Jahr 2014 angekündigt. Läuft zur Zeit im internen Beta-Test bei Microsoft. Darauf warten schon viele Kunden.
Data Loss Prevention
In Exchange schon lange vorhanden, im Oktober für OneDrive for Business schon angekündigt, aber noch nicht überall ausgerollt. Konfiguration von Warnhinweisen über alle Office-Dokumente, die dem Anwender Warnungen anzeigen, dass er im Begriff ist, für das Unternehmen kritische Dokumente in OneDrive for Business synchronisiert, genauer gesagt, diese Dokumente mit anderen Personen teilen möchte.
Bessere MDM Möglichkeiten
Die MDM Möglichkeiten (Überwachung, welche mobile Geräte wie und wo benutzt werden) zu erweitern. Viele Enterprise Kunden benutzen dazu schon Drittprodukte wie Airwatch, Good oder Mobilelron, können diese aber mangels geeigneter API Schnittstellen nur unzureichend einsetzen.
Teilen eines Ordners
Bisher können nur einzelne Dateien geteilt werden. Für Projekte mit mehreren Dateien ist das aber umständlich. Das Teilen eines Ordners wäre eine nützliche und zeitsparende Funktion.
Synchronisation nur auf Rechner, die in der Domain gelistet sind
Bisher kann jeder Anwender mit seinen Credentials auf jedem beliebigen Gerät eine lokale Synchronisation anstoßen. Auch auf Geräten, die sich nicht in der Domäne befinden. Das wünschen sich viele Administratoren und ist essentiell für die IT vieler Firmen.
Reporting und Auditing
Administratoren wären schon glücklich, wenn Sie wüssten, wer wann, wo und wie auf OneDrive for Business und Daten von Teamsites zugegriffen hat. Wenn ich schon die Synchronisierung nicht einschränken kann, möchte ich als Administrator konfigurierbare Audit- und Reporting Funktionen haben.
OneDrive for Business als zusätzliches Laufwerk
Benutzer von Windows 8.1 und OneDrive kennen es schon. Die Einbindung in den Windows Explorer. Und Microsoft würde eine viel schnellere Akzeptanz für OneDrive for Business finden, wenn sich OneDrive for Business als zusätzliches Laufwerk einbinden lassen würde. Per Gruppenrichtlinie oder einem Konfiguration Programm. So wie in vielen Unternehmen noch File-Server eingebunden sind.
Teilweise Synchronisation
Microsoft hat zuerst 1 TB, dann unbegrenzten Speicher für OneDrive for Business zur Verfügung gestellt. Was toll klingt, scheitert derzeit an der Menge von Dateien, weil wie oben beschrieben, SharePoint Einschränkungen vorhanden sind. Aber selbst wenn diese nicht mehr existieren würden, ergibt sich ein weiteres Problem. Wie viele ihrer mobilen Geräte haben 1 TB (oder mehr) Speicherkapazität? Und derzeit wird bei der Synchronisation auch noch beim Caching das gleiche Volumen zusätzlich verlangt. Also wird, wie beim kleinen Bruder OneDrive eine teilweise Synchronisation eine Grundvoraussetzung. Dort heißt das “Smart Files”. Aber mit unbeschränktem Speicher in der Wolke ist auch dieses Konzept nicht (mehr) ideal. Erste Ansätze finden wir in der letzten Build (9879) von Windows 10. Dort wurde ein neues Konzept vorgestellt, das im ersten Moment eigentlich fünf Schritte zurück geht. (Synchronisation bei Windows 7). Und auch dem Unmut der Tester hervorgerufen hat. Aber das ist nur der erste Schritt für die Entwicklung von nextGen Sync. Aber bis zur Fertigstellung von Windows 10 sind ja noch ein paar Tage Zeit.
Anzeige geteilter Dateien im Windows Explorer
Diese Funktion (ja, gibt es bei DropBox), wünschen sich viele OneDrive Benutzer. Was der personelle Client nicht kann, ist dem professionellen Variante ebenso vorenthalten.
Das sind nur einige wenige Wünsche, die ich an Microsoft habe. Die auf meiner persönlichen Wunschliste stehen. Die Wunschliste hat keine Priorität in der Reihenfolge. Ich weiß, es gibt noch viel mehr Wünsche . Und wer noch ganz wichtige fehlende Funktionalitäten für OneDrive und OneDrive for Business hat, kann diese ja in den Kommentaren hinzufügen. Ich würde mich freuen. Ach ja, und am Ende des Jahres 2015 werde ich erneut zusammen fassen, was Microsoft davon verwirklicht hat.
