OneDrive for Business has several limitations. For example, in the filename. Or with the prefix “_” in the filename. Bill Baer, Senior Product Marketing Manager by Microsoft, has published on TechNet an article about several problems with filenames. Most of them has her origin on SharePoint Server. But not at all:
Problem | description |
Location on SD card | if you have a SD card on your device, you cannot use this card to take this as a location for OneDrive for Business data. |
Roaming Profiles | For OneDrive for Business it is not possible to use it with roaming profiles. |
network drives | You cannot use OneDrive for business on a network drive. Therefore, and this is a great custom wish, you cannot give OneDrive for business with a fixed drive letter. You will find several instructions on the internet, how to do that. Sometimes they will work, Sometimes not. Or not anymore. That’s a a question about many parameters, like OS and so on. |
With these restrictions it is not possible, f.e to use it on a campus with several fixed machines, to use OneDrive for Business with local synced data. If you have such an environment, you should disable OneDrive for Business with OAT before deployment, or If you have still deployed, restrict the usage with GPO (group policies).
But this will always work: Use the web-Browser to connect to your SharePoint Server 2013 (on prem) or SharePoint Online (Office 365). Then you may able to work with Office Online on your documents. And you may do Co-Authoring. And that not only with you personal data in OneDrive for business, fka Mysite. Also on all documents in team sites, where you may have access. If you may not able to work with Office Online on a specified document, you may download this document to your device. But not a complete local synchronization of all documents at all.
Admins should enable access to these documents from “outside”, then users may access these data on her own devices, and here they may synchronize all data on these devices for offline usage. And that not only with windows devices…
I want to use OneDrive for Business in an Active Directory school enviroment to enable access to private documents for teachers from home. We actually use folder redirection to a Windows Server on Windows Clients. Is there any chance to integrate OneDrive for Business except a simple link to webbrowser without getting sync problems?

Hans, do you know whether OnDrive for Business supports the use of meta data columns when accessing the information through the Windows explorer?
If not, any idea whether this is on the product roadmap?

short answer: meta data: not this time
Roadmap: AFAIK, no, and if Yes with a low priority:
Reason: They have to Close the gap to the Consumer OneDrive,: part sync, less Limits, stability..
